Europe has a strong history in Free-To-Air (FTA) television services and many millions of Europeans consume FTA content on daily basis. Today’s viewer wants more content and more control of what they watch in a way that traditional TV cannot satisfy.

To respond to the consumer’s demand the TV industry is reliant upon standards. These standards have to be established to release the required investment in TV services by broadcasters and in new and more sophisticated products from TV and STB vendors.

The adoption of standards is delivering enormous benefits to the TV viewer and the TV industry alike. Already approved by ETSI, HbbTV (ETSI TS 102 796) is the ground breaking standard responding to this need for hybrid broadcast broadband TV. HbbTV is already the established standard in Germany with the major broadcasters including ARD, ZDF and RTL producing a wide range of HbbTV services and a rapidly increasing number of TV device vendors offering readily available retail products.

In France, the Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA), the French government regulatory body for TV, has also publicly backed HbbTV with the introduction of HbbTV based interactive services due in 2011.

In the UK the Digital TV Group (DTG), the industry association for digital television, has now publically stated that it’s Connected TV presentation group is focussing on three areas, an HTML-based presentation technology (building on HbbTV), “better graphics” and a framework to enable co-existence of HTML and MHEG-5 with other presentation technologies.
